about mE
Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year. My name is Coach Gills (sounds like Jills). The Gills family was fortunate enough to join the SYVCS family in 2012 . We choose this school because of the culture of community, parent involvement, desire to meet students where their needs are, and lastly because at SYVCS things are just done a little different. For these reasons it was a perfect fit for our family. I am honored to have the opportunity to join the family in another capacity as the Physical Education and Health Teacher.
Growing up in the valley, I attended Los Olivos Elementary and Santa Ynez High School. I have been teaching since 1997 and fortunate enough to have worked a variety of grade levels. From a young age, I knew I wanted to teach. I graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego and taught down there for a few years before moving back to the area. I have three beautiful children Anthony, Mikey, and Sydney who are very active and keep me on my toes. We enjoy playing a variety of sports, the beach, and pretty much anything outdoors.
My love for coaching and teaching go hand in hand. Having the ability to do what I love and teach what I know can inspire students to find their own passions. I have been involved in Physical Education for many years in several different capacities. Most recently I have coached my children’s sports teams: basketball, baseball, and softball. My coaching style is to instruct in a positive, fun, competitive environment that fosters personal growth, encourages athletes to do their best, and develop a love and understanding of their sport. My experience extends from preschool age up through the collegiate level, and everything in between. Coaching and teaching these many levels has helped me develop a strong foundation on what can and should be expected from students at all levels. I am thrilled to be a part of this school.
I will have more information to share as we get closer to school starting. I look forward to being a part of your child' success.

P.E. AT SYVCS? The approach for instruction within Physical Education at SYVCS will be that of functional fitness that can be practically applied to their lives outside of school and in their extracurricular activities. This is achieved through differentiated instruction at each level, teaching skills through games, providing opportunities for individual and group success, tracking progress with benchmarks and sharing knowledge about overall wellness.

My Vision
My vision is to integrate an overall umbrella of wellness; teaching students how to set goals and reach them, understand the relationship between the foods they consume and how it fuels their bodies, and recognizing that they are all stronger than they think they are. SYVCS students will develop strong character, build confidence, challenge themselves, and become advocates to family and friends on promoting the value of a healthy lifestyle.
